  • New Ski Run Named After Legendary Trailblazer

DOUG COOMBS HONORED by JACKSON HOLE MOUNTAIN RESORT

    trailmap.jpg

(Teton Village, Wyo., October 31, 2006) Following the tragic death of legendary skier and mountaineer Doug Coombs in Europe last spring, many fellow skiers struggled to come to terms with the loss. Editorial has flowed about his incredible style and his unique ability to teach while sharing his passion for life, on and off snow. Creating life long memories for everybody who came into contact with Doug Coombs is a common theme.

As the snow returns to the steep slopes of the Tetons, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (JHMR) announced it will respectfully dedicate a ski run to Doug, simply called Coombs.

Coombs is located on the infamous expert Headwall terrain above the Bridger Gondola, where Doug spent many of his days freeskiing and guiding clients. After a short fifteen minute hike up Pepi’s Ridge, skiers will traverse into Coombs. The run starts as an open slope and narrows mid-way into a gully that ends when it meets Lupine Way. Coombs run is 800 vertical feet in length, has a north east aspect with an average pitch of 30 degrees and a maximum pitch of 35 degrees.

“In agreement with Doug’s wife Emily we decided there is no better place than the Headwall for a run dedicated to Doug,” commented Connie Kemmerer, JHMR owner and friend of Doug Coombs. “He had such an impact on this Resort both professionally and personally, he is sorely missed. We hope that with his name now firmly on the map, he will continue to inspire those who enjoy our terrain.” She added.

“Jackson Hole was a special place for Doug and I am really happy that the Resort has dedicated a run in his memory. I look forward to skiing Coombs with our son, David in future years,” added Emily Coombs.

While making improvements, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort remains committed to preserving the Old West. Entering our 40th season the same old-fashioned hospitality that welcomed yesterday's mavericks and outlaws, still welcomes today's skiers and snowboarders. With the new Bridger Restaurant, new East Ridge Chair to the summit and a new 100 passenger tram in the near future, the legend continues. For more JHMR information please visit jacksonhole40.com.

  • Spectacular October

Winter is coming and I just had to share this photo taken by a friend of mine who was visiting over the weekend.

Warren is a Jackson Hole local who has temporarily moved back east as he got a job offer that was to good to refuse. Must have been a pretty good offer to leave scenery like this.

Warren came back to visit us for the weekend and snapped this beautiful shot while out elk hunting. While he did not get his elk, he will just have to settle for the great memories of trekking around Jackson Hole.

We look forward to welcoming Warren back to paradise soon.

  • Snowblowing at Snow King

Although in Jackson Hole, we are not known for our snow making, it is an exciting sign of the times when the machines get fired up.

Snow King won't start their snow making routine until the seasoned experts over there feel we are going to have cool temps and snowfall for the rest of the Fall...so it is exciting when they start. They like to get a head start on Mother Nature because Olympic Athletes from all over the world use Snow King's steep surface to train on.

They will open when they have enough snow, which the past few years has been before Thanksgiving.

Think Snow, let's hope those snow makers out!

  • October Snowfall

Still snowing on and off! We are supposed to get up to 10 inches in the mountains tonight and more snow over the weekend. Sunday will be sunny, but with cool temperatures.

Last year's season ruining/ending/preventing (whatever you want to call it) injury, I am so excited to get out my skis and point downhill.

Think snow, because I want to point downhill on some powder!

  • Halloween in Jackson Hole 2006

There are a lot of reasons to be excited for Halloween in Jackson Hole. We are not the most grown up group of people in Jackson, and I have several friends who name Halloween as their favorite holiday of the year.

Children trick-or-treat on Town Square, and area businesses are happy to open their doors to the cute little monsters, princesses, animals and cartoon characters.

On Saturday, October 28th, Snow King Resort and KMTN are throwing their 28th Annual Halloween Party Fundraiser. It benefits the Community Children's Project in Jackson Hole. The Community Children's Project provides emergency childcare assistance to families in need in our community.

There will be a band and costume contest with prizes. The tickets are $15 per person.

On October 26th, the Log Cabin Saloon is having a pumpkin carving contest.

There will probably be other events that I will tell you about when I hear about them. The Snake River Brewing Company always throws a great party. So keep posted!

  • Snow Overnight/In the Forecast

Our wintery fall weather looks like it has begun. Today is expected to be sunny in the morning, with a rain/snow mix tonight. Wednesday sunny, Thursday snow. Oh, October in Jackson Hole!

It looks like the snow that has fallen on the upper peaks is there to stay. In the past it seems that the snow that falls at the end of October in town is the snow that stays until April,, so I guess as early as next week, we can expect a snowy valley floor.

I don't know if I'm quite ready yet, I had a wonderful picnic in Grand Teton National Park on Sunday, and am still trying to iron out the many kinks in my drive.

I think it is inevitable though, so this weekend I'll be taking everything out of my storage shed and moving summer gear to the back and winter gear to the front.

We'll be skiing in no time!

  • Morning Surprise

Last Thursday, I was able to go out to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort to check out the progress of the new restaurant, retail center and cafeteria being built at the top of the Bridger Gondola. The weather was gorgeous, and the gondola ride up amazing, with Fall colors all around us.

When we got to the top, I realized why JHMR is so excited about the new addition. The building is beautiful! The walkways around are heated, and the views are amazing. It is going to add a touch of elegance to our resort that is typically known for its steep and challenging terrain.

Here's photo of the restaurant, you can see that it overlooks Corbet's Couloir:

  • Snow Flurries in Valley

Yesterday's weather was pretty interesting. It started in the morning with a steady light rain. At about 2:00 though it changed, and suddenly snow flurries were swirling in town square. These were the big fat flakes we are used to seeing in the winter! The flurries continued throughout the day, with snow accumulating in the mountains and buttes around town.

Here's an image captured from the webcam on top at Corbet's Cabin this morning:
