With over 97% of the county and surrounding areas designated wild space, it's easy to be reminded of the importance of keeping our globe healthy and happy. Here are a few things worth noting this Earth Day:

In April 2006, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort achieved ISO 14001 certification following our Silver Eagle Award for Environmental Excellence - Visual Impact in 2005 and Silver Eagle Award for Energy Conservation in 2003.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is third party ISO certified as a "green" company, the second of only two ski resorts in the US to achieve this recognition.

All of Grand Targhee's lifts run on “green power” – a renewable energy generated from green hydroelectric power out of the Island Park Dam and Reservoir on the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River, Idaho and wind power from Bonneville Power Association. In addition, the resort is using bio-diesel to fuel our resort shuttle buses, groomers and snow removal equipment.

Local film production house, Teton Gravity Research, practices a multitude of green initiatives. Starting in 2008 TGR's clothing line went "green". The company uses organic and recycled polyester materials in the production of t-shirts and hoodies and the catalog is only offered electronically reducing paper waste.

TGR is the first action sports film company to go carbon neutral. All of their films are directed to incorporate environmental issues, to generate awareness, and to inspire action. They calculate and offset their carbon footprint by logging all airline, automombile, snowmobile, and helicopter use.

Teton Village's Hotel Terra was built LEED certified, putting it in an elite class of hotels across the country. The boutique resort works to take its green efforts further preserve and protect the environment while always providing guests with a memorable, indulgent hotel experience.

To help celebrate Earth Day and Jackson Hole's extensive community commitment to sustainable living and business practice, the 2010 Jackson Eco-Fair will take place in Powderhorn Park this Saturday, April 24th. Admission is free! Come see what local businesses and organizations are doing to better and help preserve the environment. Enjoy free food, drink, beer and wine samples along with free live music and events.

If you don't have plans this Saturday night, I strongly encourage you to consider heading over to Driggs. Not normally thought of as the social epicenter of the greater Jackson area, this small Idaho town certainly will be this weekend. Saturday night boasts the second annual Spud Drive-in premiere of TGR's 09/10 action snow sports film, Re: Session. Catch all of the new school footage at one of the most classic, old-school stomping grounds around: Driggs' drive-in movie theater, better known as The Spud. Take it all in from the front seat of your car, your down-puffy jacket clad arm wrapped around your sweety's furry-hooded shoulder. Or get out and wander the parking lot, sharing the experience with other skiers and snowboarders getting stoked for the upcoming winter season. Regardless, a film experience at The Spud isn't complete without a hamburger and tater tots from the concession stand. Follow it up with a visit to the Knotty Pine. Don't miss it! Visit TGR for more information. Oh, and did I mention that attendees will receive a 2-for-1 lift ticket to Grand Targhee Resort?

This short film highlights climate change and its impact on our winters and snow sports. From young snow angel makers to the most experienced mountain guides, professional athletes to professional meteorologists, the U.S. to Europe, Generations discusses our warming climate and how this climate shift is impacting ski resorts around the globe. In conjunction with The North Face and Protect Our Winters (POW), TGR gives us one more reason to start paying attention to the environment. The film is complete with athlete interviews, decades of ski footage, scientific insight and advice on little things we can to help reduce our carbon footprint. Check out the Generations Trailer for a quick look at a short film that boasts a very big message.

One is Old Bill's Fun Run, which took place last weekend. Then there's the Fall Arts Festival, which wrapped up one of its most successful events in history over the weekend. Finally, there's the TGR film premiere, which gets us all excited for the ski season to come. With all three now behind us, it's officially the fall season. However, unlike years past in which things shut down and slow down and turn off, it would appear that this off season is more turned on than ever before with great off-season deals and specials. Watch for upcoming dining specials throughout the town of Jackson and Teton Village and of course, there's the 3rd Night FREE lodging special at select properties throughout Jackson Hole now until October 15th. Visit us to learn more about additional deals and packages throughout the fall and early winter seasons.

It's quite the weekend to send of summer, kick off fall, pray for snow, analyze art and boogie down to some bluegrass music. A little R&R Jackson style.

Pre-ski season. It's a phenomenon in many a ski town. It's about this time of year that snow junkies start jonzing for shorter, colder days and mountain top dustings. The skis come out of the closet and hit the tuning table. www.MountainWeather.com starts to get a lot more traffic from those hoping that they'll see a storm cloud or two in the five-day forecast.

Of course, it's a little premature. It is only August after all. According to the seasonal calendar, we're still sitting squarely in summer. But a few things start to happen this time of year that get those of us who love to ski thinking winter a bit sooner than we might otherwise.

The first is the arrival of Skiing Magazine's annual Gear Guide, which showed up in mail boxes last week. Skiing has traditionally been the first of the ski rags to emerge from the summer slumber with a gentle reminder that November is just around the corner. And wouldn't you know it, at least three Jackson locals grace the inside pages, including professional skiers and gear testers, Charlotte Moats and Jeff Annetts and ski photographer Chris Figenshau. It's hard to walk by any flat surface, from the grungy top of a ski bum coffee table to a professional workspace desk, without seeing the black cover and screaming neon green lettering that reads, "GEAR GUIDE."

Soon, Powder and SKI magazines will follow suit with their innaugural 08/09 issues. But before they do, Labor Day ski sales and swaps will be happening on every corner and in every ski shop from here to Who-ville. Those who are more skiwear savy than myself (I tend to stick to basic all black) will start researching the new attire trends. Is it a mono-chrome year? Or is an all-orange outfit so 2004? Is neon in? And how do we feel about one-pieces this season?

After the skis have been tuned and the ski clothes purchased and the ski magazines are littering floors and tables and night stands, it's time for ski movie premiers. If you grew up skiing, then you've probably been to at least one of these. You know, those classic ski films that feature the iconic say-so of Warren Miller as he voices over the likes of Glen Plake and Scott Schmidt doing back scratchers in their neon North Face one-pieces. And if you get your pre-season fix from these films, then you're probably a frequenter of productions from Matchstick, Level 1, Nimbus Independent, Poor Boyz, Rage Films and Jackson's local ski film production house, Teton Gravity Research.

Of course, it's all down hill from there. Once you've been teased with big screen powder shots, there's no turning back. It's time to train with squats and lunges and hikes up the nearest hill with skis or a snowboard strapped to your pack. Okay, maybe not. But with the arrival of that glorious Gear Guide last week, we did see the start of the pre-season madness. Get out the wax and check out the pre-season trailors. Lunges and squats are optional.
